TRACES NO. 1: YOUTH BREAK CENTER, INC./ RADIOTRON (2012)

“TRACES” is a short web doc series exploring the history of places through the stories of people who where there.

For our first episode, we take a closer look at a space that was once known around the world for its pivotal role in the west coast Hip Hop movement. We spend some time speaking with Macarthur Park local, Carmelo Alvarez, the founding Director of Youth Break Center, Inc. A.K.A. “Radiotron”. The Center gained its reputation for being a safe space for breakdancing, popping, graffiti art, MCing and DJing during the mid-80s when Hip Hop itself was still in its formative years. For a brief moment in time, the youth of Macarthur Park, and greater Los Angeles, had a haven for creativity that reflected a sign of the times. Carmelo, an artist and youth/culture advocate himself, takes us back to how it started, how it ended, and gives us some context on its role in the community.
